More than just a garden centre

Reception class children from Warlingham Village Primary School paid Knights Chelsham a visit recently to learn about planting seeds - and take part in a centre-wide treasure hunt.

More than 30 children turned up with teachers and parents to be shown how to plant sunflower seeds by our plants expert, Chris Coomber, and try and find a range of flowers, herbs and garden-related items dotted about the centre.

Teacher Helen Swallow said: 'The children really enjoyed themselves and the tasks were just at the right level for them. We look forward to coming back next year."

Staff at our centres in Chelsham and Woldingham marked the recent Sport Relief day by baking cakes for our customers.

Thanks to them, and those customers who took advantage of the treats on offer, we raised almost £180 for the charity.

Winners of our Spring Flower Art Competition gathered at the Dene Restaurant in Woldingham to receive their prizes from Mrs Joyce Knight, the wife of Knights’ owner, Mr David Knight, and the Chelsham centre manager, Frank Holland.

The competition was split into three categories, Under 12s, Teens and Over 20s, and we received more than 80 entries. The winners were chosen by our customers and almost 100 people made the effort to vote for their favourites. Prizes included a garden arrangement, vouchers and gardening equipment for the youngsters. The winners were:

Under 12s:

Winner: Heather King, Second: Chloe Wilson, Third: Isabelle Bottomley-Young.

Winner: Tyler Edwards, Second: Ethan Edwards, Third: Helen Pritchard.

 Over 20s:

Winner: Josephine Gowers, Second: Rosemary Seymour, Third: Alan Holmes.

Congratulations to all the winners and many thanks to everyone who entered a painting or drawing and who voted!

PLEASE NOTE: we still have a large number of paintings awaiting collection. Please come to our Chelsham centre to collect them. Just ask for Richard Hunt at the tills ( weekdays only ).

On Saturday 25th November, Santa arrived at both of our stores for the festive season. He arrived in style in a beautiful horsedrawn carriage and many

families were waiting to give him a warm welcome. After saying a big hello to everyone, he could then be found in his Grotto where children enjoyed the

animated bear band and seasonal scene before going through to meet Santa and give him their lists for the big day!

Thursday the 19th and Friday the 20th of October saw our annual Christmas Preview Events at Chelsham and Woldingham respectively, where all of our

Privilege Club Members were invited along for the grand opening of our spectacular Christmas Departments.

All members received 10% off every purchase made on the evening, and there were also many other extra special offers to be had.

The evenings were, as always, a great success and there was live music and free mince pies and mulled wine to get everyone in thoroughly festive mood.

On Friday 15th September we took a coach trip to Wakehurst Botanic Gardens in West Sussex.

It was a very enjoyable trip which gave our party time to wander amongst the many varied species of trees and plants which takes you on a walk through

the temperate woodlands of the world. There was also time to visit the Millenium Seed Bank run by Kew, which exhibits information on the vast collection

of seeds held within the Bank, aiming to conserve seeds from 25% of the worlds flora by the year 2020.

After a leisurely lunch, there was a very informative guided tour which gave a more in-depth view of many of the tree and plant species at Wakehurst.

On Saturday 12th August we held our Annual Fun Dog Show at our Chelsham Branch.

This year the proceeds from the show went towards raising money for Battersea Cats and Dogs Home, a very worthy and fitting cause indeed.

As you will see from the gallery, everybody had a great time and there were many different classes to enter including Fancy Dress, Best Handshake, Most

Fabulous Fella, Loveliest Lady, Waggiest Tail, Best Rescue Dog and many more.

We also had a Barbecue courtesy of our Seasons Restaurant and there were several stall holders including Chic Grooming, Pet Photo Shoot Photography,

Animal Concern, German Shepherd Dog Rescue and Nancy's Homemade Cakes. We also had a raffle with lots of lovely pet related prizes.

The sun shone and it really was a great day and we would like to thank all of you who came along and joined in the fun, and helped us to raise money

for such a worthy cause.

On the 6 & 7 July we had our annual coach trips to The Hampton Court Flower Show. These trips are always a big hit with our customers and both were fully booked. As you will see from the photos, there was plenty to see and do, from all things floral to show gardens and the well known Hairy Bikers giving a talk on making the most of using elements from your garden to produce delicious home-cooked meals.

The sun shone on both days and a wonderful time was had by all!

Half term week was an exciting time down at The Dene at Woldingham.

Many different events were featured throughout the week including a visit from Jack the Shire Horse from Hurst Green Shires, a wonderful falconry display from First

Class Falconry, as well as a visit from Reptile Rescue where you could meet and handle a wide variety of different reptiles.

There were also 3 Punch & Judy shows from Geoffrey Gould, Children's Entertainer, as well as a Krafty Kids Seed Art class and pond dipping courtesy of H2O Aquatics.

It really was a sunny, fun and entertaining week for all!

Thankfully the sun was shining down on all of the chilli lovers who visited our Centres for our splendid Chilli Fest weekend.

With plants, compost and feeds for sale, even the most non-green fingered amongst us were tempted to have a go at growing

their very own home-grown chillies.

A fantastically hot menu was available for all Chilli Heads willing to dare trying the fiery heat of their beloved vegetable, in the

thankfully cool environment of Seasons Restaurant at Chelsham or The Dene at Woldingham.

In February this year, we called upon any budding artists to enter our Daffodil Art Competition. The artwork could be submitted as pen and ink work or as watercolour or oil-based paintings.

Categories included under 12s, teens and over 20s, and all the artwork was displayed at our Chelsham Branch throughout the month of March.

All the pictures were of a very high standard and it was very difficult to pick the winners who were decided by all of the staff here at Knights.

Sadly we didn't receive any teen entries and so there were only 2 overall winners.

The winners were as follows:

Under 12s category - winner Charlie Blake

Over 20s category - winner Shirley Lindridge

Both winners can be seen receiving their prizes and certificates in the photograph below.

We would like to say a big thank you to everyone that entered and we look forward to seeing your entries in our painting competition next year.
